Have you ever had a time when someone kept repeating something to you again and again? Maybe they think that you can't hear them, or maybe they just want to make sure that you understand what they are trying to say. The Again and Again Signpost is just like that. When we see a person, an object, a word or phrase, or even a situation pop up again and again in our reading, we know that we have come in contact with the Again and Again Signpost. The author may be trying to tell us something about the theme or conflict through this signpost, so it is imperative that we STOP and Notice and Note the signpost. When you stop, you have to ask yourself the anchor question, "Why does this keep showing up again and again?" Remember that the author has put them there for a reason and it is our job as amazing readers to dive deeper into the text and find meaning! | |
The Giving Tree
One of the best examples there is to use when practicing with the Again and Again Signpost. As you list to the story being read by Shel Silverstein himself, see if you can spot those Again and Again Signposts. Pause the video and answer your anchor question on a piece of paper or you can print out the poem and take notes there. |
