Have you ever been doing something when all of a sudden you have a flashback to something that has happened in the past? If so, then you already have a good grasp on the Memory Moment Signpost. This signpost requires us to do just like the others and dig deeper as we are reading and look for those times when a character thinks back to a memory. This could be a pleasant memory or an unpleasant one. Whenever we see our character doing this, we have to stop and ask ourselves "Why is this memory important?" When we answer this, we will find out more about the theme of the story, the conflict the character or characters are dealing with in the story, and we might even find out about events that are going to happen later in the story (foreshadowing). Take a look at this short film and see if you can find the Memory Moment that happens. When you find it, pause the video and ask yourself our Essential Question.
The Giving Tree
Everyday we get advice in some form or fashion from someone who is older and wiser than us. It may be in a brief conversation, or it may be in a lecture because we have made a bad choice. No matter how we receive this advice, it is always important to take it to heart. It may not be what we want to hear at the time, but it is valuable for us to become better people. The Words of the Wiser Signpost requires us to look for times in our reading when that same thing happens. An older character (they could be 5 months older or 50 years older) offers our protagonist some kind of advice. When we see this happening in our stories, we have to STOP and Notice and Note that we have come across a Words of the Wiser Signpost. When we do this, we have to ask ourselves, "What is the life lesson and how might it affect the character?" Notice that there are two parts to that question. Both are essential for us to think about and discuss with our fellow readers because they help us dive into the theme of the poem, picture book, short story, or novel that we are reading. Make sure to look for this and all of your other signposts as you are reading! They will help you dive deep into the waters where all of the good stuff is.... just like the iceberg!
