I am so excited for this school year! We have some great things planned for the students within the classroom and school-wide. As always, academics are our first priority but we like to have some fun while learning! Please make sure you look over the discipline procedures with your child for this school year. They have changed for our school and it is vitally important that you look over the procedures carefully. Lunch is also a new adventure this year! Make sure that you ask your child about it! I look forward to hearing from you and thank you for sharing your child with me this year!
Your child will have a sticker for you to sign saying that you have visited the site (make sure you bookmark it and check back for updates). They also have a release form for you to sign if you choose about using pictures in the classroom! Bring on 2015-2016!! The best is yet to come.... and I can't wait! This school year may be the best yet! So get ready.... the bus is moving!
I don't know about you, but I cannot believe that it is school time again. It seems like just yesterday we were saying goodbye... but it is time for "Hello!" again! I hope you are super excited about this school year because I am so pumped! I have been thinking of you and planning this summer and have some new, exciting things planned for us this year. My classroom is under renovation right now, and I can't wait for you to see it! The hallways at BMS and new tile in the classrooms will blow you away too! Brand new school for a brand new year! Here is a sneak peek:
Reading books does wonders... including helping you make parodies of popular songs! Enjoy! Have you ever been doing something when all of a sudden you have a flashback to something that has happened in the past? If so, then you already have a good grasp on the Memory Moment Signpost. This signpost requires us to do just like the others and dig deeper as we are reading and look for those times when a character thinks back to a memory. This could be a pleasant memory or an unpleasant one. Whenever we see our character doing this, we have to stop and ask ourselves "Why is this memory important?" When we answer this, we will find out more about the theme of the story, the conflict the character or characters are dealing with in the story, and we might even find out about events that are going to happen later in the story (foreshadowing). Take a look at this short film and see if you can find the Memory Moment that happens. When you find it, pause the video and ask yourself our Essential Question.
The Giving Tree
Everyday we get advice in some form or fashion from someone who is older and wiser than us. It may be in a brief conversation, or it may be in a lecture because we have made a bad choice. No matter how we receive this advice, it is always important to take it to heart. It may not be what we want to hear at the time, but it is valuable for us to become better people. The Words of the Wiser Signpost requires us to look for times in our reading when that same thing happens. An older character (they could be 5 months older or 50 years older) offers our protagonist some kind of advice. When we see this happening in our stories, we have to STOP and Notice and Note that we have come across a Words of the Wiser Signpost. When we do this, we have to ask ourselves, "What is the life lesson and how might it affect the character?" Notice that there are two parts to that question. Both are essential for us to think about and discuss with our fellow readers because they help us dive into the theme of the poem, picture book, short story, or novel that we are reading. Make sure to look for this and all of your other signposts as you are reading! They will help you dive deep into the waters where all of the good stuff is.... just like the iceberg! |
